“I think celebrations are always meant to instruct and inspire, to empower people to use their own creative skills through images and ritual to action.” — Corita Kent
Celebration and community were central to Corita’s creative practice and teaching. Her pedagogy and art were shaped by collaboration, experimentation, and transforming the everyday into a site of meaning.
The spirited events and rituals that took place on the Immaculate Heart College campus often emphasized the making, sharing, and bringing together of ideas and people. This ethos reached its most vivid expression in the college’s annual Mary’s Day celebration.
Highlighting the unique place of celebration in Corita’s work, Unordinary Days: Corita and the Art of Celebration features a selection of Corita’s iconic serigraphs alongside photography, films, audio recordings, and archival ephemera that sketch a poignant account of the college’s Mary’s Day events.
